This article is intended to make the information of reproductive toxins in personal care products available and accessible in one place. It is my goal to provide a comprehensive view of what can be harming your ability to become pregnant.

The potential for damage to the reproductive system within your daily use personal care items increases every day. Of the thousands of synthetic chemicals, there are quite a few that have shown, when tested on animals, to be toxic to embryo, fetus, hormone disruptor, endocrine disruptor, cause spontaneous abortions and more. In this post, I want to focus solely on the known chemicals that cause damage to reproductive systems, (reproductive toxins) and unborn child. To have this information, using it to remove these toxins from products used daily on skin and some are inhaled when breathing even. Possibly, maybe and hopefully the removal of these synthetic chemicals could make a difference in your ability to conceive.

“Under the FD & C Act, cosmetic products and ingredients, with the exception of color additives, do not require FDA approval before they go on the market…”FDA Website

Recently, I came across information on a drug Diethylstilbestrol or DES that is a pharmaceutical prescribed to women considered high risk of miscarriage and complications in pregnancy, DES is an oestrogen, replacement female synthetic sex hormone commonly prescribed during the years 1938-1971, although not solely in North America, Europe, Australia and the UK.

At the time, DES was given quite freely and seen as a blessing to women with a past history of miscarriages who were finally able to give birth to a child they could watch grow and have children of their own. Only, not many of them went on to have children of their own.

The first generation of daughters began having a rare form of vaginal cancer, adenocarcinoma. At the time, the FDA warned against continuing to prescribe after a report linked the two. Distilbene was a European version that was continued 5 years past (1977) the link between the rare cancer and DES was publicly known and the FDA warning.

DES is a teratogen, causes malformation, birth defects in the embryo or fetus. Both male and female children are affected with most exposed were born or pregnant between the years 1938-1971, although this is not the only time. There is a possibility that 3rd generations of births can be affected.

Some, NOT ALL, of the known damages to be aware of are breast cancer, miscarriages, cancers, reproductive abnormalities, ectopic pregnancy in daughters, unstable endocrine and/or immune system

The reason I am writing this blog is to add a second, or third, maybe 50th? Layer to the issue of reproductive difficulties. If you, or someone you know, are having a difficult time conceiving, there may be an attack on your reproductive system being played out, every day, adding to the problem.  If you have already been exposed to reproductive toxins in another form, then these chemicals being applied to skin, when used in a hot shower, opened pores and absorbed even more or otherwise applied to skin, will still be absorbed into your bloodstream at over 60% of what has been applied, delivered to each cell and organ in under 30 seconds. These chemicals, used on skin, could be compounding the attack on your ability to conceive. The list of ‘Infertility Chemicals” will give you an idea of the ingredients to avoid for your reproductive health.

Cosmetics are not just eyeshadow, lipstick, powder and haircolor:

“ The(FD&C Act) defines cosmetics by their intended use, as “articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body…for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance” [FD&C Act, sec. 201(i)]. Among the products included in this definition are skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup preparations, cleansing shampoos, permanent waves, hair colors, and deodorants, as well as any substance intended for use as a component of a cosmetic product.”~ (FDA website)

In the 10,500 chemicals used by the cosmetics industry, approximately only 15%, or 1600 have ever been tested for the effects on humans. Of the ones that have been tested, most were created for industrial use. The accompanying MSDS sheets for many of the chemicals that have them will instruct for handling:  no skin contact. Handling is only done with full protective gear including face mask, eye protection and respirators.

Carcinogens-causing cancer,

Tertatogens– cause birth defects, congenital malformation or deformities on embryo or fetus. When exposed during first two weeks of gestation will usually kill the embryo.

Genotoxin-damage to DNA molecule in genes, causing mutations, tumors, cancer, etc

Mutagen-changes genetic mutation, usually of DNA, likely leading to cancer

Toxin– a poison, contaminant, poisonous substance can cause disease on contact with or absorption. Can vary from minor to acute

Hemotoxin- destruction of blood cells

My reason for writing this is to make available the potential for damage to the reproductive system within your daily use personal care items. Of the thousands of synthetic chemicals, there are quite a few that have shown, when tested on animals, to be toxic to embryo, fetus, hormone disruptor, endocrine disruptor, cause spontaneous abortions and more. In this post, I want to focus solely on the known chemicals that cause damage to reproductive systems and unborn child. To have this information, using it to remove these toxins from products used daily on skin and some are inhaled when breathing even. Possibly, maybe and hopefully the removal of these synthetic chemicals could make a difference in your ability to conceive.  Removing or at least limiting, the use of these “infertility chemicals” could increase your chances to have a child.

Although this list could easily overwhelm you and cause frustration. Taking it as a whole could make it seem like there is no way to tackle such a time consuming chore as reading every ingredient list of each product to remove the ones that contain these most harmful ones.  Once the harmful products have been removed, what are you supposed to use to clean and prepare your skin and hair?

Do keep in mind, read labels and check ingredients.

Don’t just jump in and order the first products you find claiming to be all natural. Just like with any product that has the potential to help or harm, there will be businesses with respect for you and your health and some that are only concerned about getting your money out of your hand and into theirs.

You need to do your research on natural products and the business you purchase them from.

Some things to look for: Do they provide full disclosure of ingredients? or do they hide some behind the words “fragrance” or “parfum”? Are the products colorful? Do they list “mineral” “pigment” “mica” as ingredients? What do they use for preservatives if they have products that contain water? How much water is in these products? In many cases, preservatives end up being a harmful synthetic chemical. Look up the preservatives and do some research. A good judge of the commitment to no synthetic chemicals is the packaging. Any time you have a product made with “ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS” that is in a plastic tube, bottle or other container, the chemicals, toxic, will leach into that product for the entire time it lasts. Then the chemicals will continue to leach into our soil, groundwater, food crops and ocean for the next 450-1000 years until it breaks down. Not so safe. An article on Green packaging.

See if the business provides transparency, a story, a reason that lets you be aware of their reasons behind their commitment to making what they do. In this case, why is making safe, all natural products important to them?  We have ours on our “About Us” page.  Many small online natural companies also have theirs somewhere on their website.  This “WHY?” is important.  have a big name, or the highest prices, to provide top quality products. It is more of a commitment to go that extra step.

I cannot guarantee that removing these ingredients from your daily regimen will improve your chances of adding to your family, but I can say it will not cause you any harm. If nothing else, exposing your body and health to less toxins on a daily basis will help you feel as if your body is able to breathe, you will feel a bit lighter, have more energy and your outlook will begin to improve.

Maybe a change to natural skincare will be a benefit; maybe feeling better overall will help. Maybe it will lead to a better chance. I cannot say, I am not a doctor.

I am a person who believes in the positive impact on your body when you switch to natural, pure and organic products and end the use of toxic, damaging, immunotoxin, carcinogen, mutagen, skin toxin, skin corrosive, respiratory toxin, kidney toxin…I can continue but I think you get the idea.

At Spa Secrets 4 U, we want to give you the safe, healthy future that you and your family deserve.  If you do find yourself expanding your family, or already have children, you might be interested in reading this article about Toxic Baby Bath products and how to avoid them
